Holiday Head

I mean no disrespect by this little blog of working airport life, so if you are a bit of a dickhead when you hit a foreign country or easily offended... just stop reading.  People work so hard for their holidays, they provide jobs by going on holidays, just sometimes a bit of common sense would be appreciated.  I work for an amazing UK holiday package company, I'm based in the airport. It is never dull.  I have absolutely no idea of what or whom I am going to encounter on a daily basis. Some days I am quite honestly mortified to be British with behaviours that come through our airport. Other days proud of my roots, but 98 percent flabbergasted! Every stag/hen group dressed as the latest trend (currently the last big boss or cowgirls) believes they are truly the only passengers to walk through 'Arrivals' in fancy dress.  Trying to work and explain to my Spanish colleagues some of the rather unexplainable slogans across t.shirts, or questionable nick names printe...

Impossible to fix

I actually despise my husband.  Daily he reminds me of why we are no longer in a marital relationship. When another person destroys another due to their addiction and then expects no consequences it is very sad.  We tried to work through it, but his dead brain cells and constant paranoid comments, own self inflicted insecurities, just made it impossible.  His days are spent moaning about 8 hours of work, my dog, my kids and allegations of me f**king the world population. He then sits in front of the TV and drinks beer.  No interaction with his kids, broken promises and mood swings.  At least three times a day I'm called slag, stupid bitch or ugly bitch. He puts me down, saying no one will want me, I can't cook. Im s shit parent, bla bla bla.  Im not immune, but I am less reactive to it  I remind myself he wasn't around 92 percent of the kids lifes due to his vanishing acts and when he is here, we all hide upstairs in my room, watching netflix or ...

One of my best and worst years.

I guess its coming up to the 1st year anniversary and I have to say that 2024 was one of my best and worst year's looking back.  In February 2024 my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. She would come to visit us at least 4 times a year for three to four weeks, but in 2023 she didn't come for her last visit.  She chose not to share her cancer with anyone but me and her male companion (which couldn't cope and left) once admitted to hospital!  I was at work and the hospital called me to notify me I needed to get there as soon as possible.  She had been suffering with bad chest infections, and not checked properly due to the covid back log. She then developed fluid on her lungs and was admitted to hospital, after collapsing at work.  This was the first I knew! I got the next flight and sat in cwmbran hospital until she finally woke up. She made a miraculous recovery and was sent home after ten days to recieve palliative care at home. They gave her 4 months ...

Kids spanish birthday parties

The Spanish embrace any occasion to have a fiesta. Birthday, school end of year, wedding, baptism, saints, you name it they celebrate it. Children's parties in Spain have taken a while to get my head around. Thank god for whats app groups, so i can at least pretend to know what the heck I'm doing!  So let's start with the under 12's.  Invites come via a birthday party group. You are provided with the child's name, location, date and start time. NO END TIME. Notification the week prior, or a few days Before.  Parties are held at special birthday venues, of soft play, or in a park. Soft play i literally dread!!! Enclosed space, kids screaming and a load of chaos! The park ones are way more tolerable.  You are expected to respond to attending or leave the group. Next is the gift group. The parents will set the amount you are giving and the gift they want, or they will buy the gift out of the money.  A bizum is expected with the amount, 10-15 euros prior to th...

Am I cut out for this?

I'm still very much a foreigner, my language skills are still lacking and quite honestly daily I am baffled by the spanish enthusiasm.  My children chose to sign up for the traditional "la jira. This is a carnival, of local schools and associations. Sounds ok?  Well 7 weeks of rehearsal's, and uncountable messages on the whatsapp group feed. (All very time consuming, when you have to bounce back and forwards to translate), two hand made costumes later, now being able to recite beauty and the beast, in spanish and not having a bloody clue of what's next, anxiety kicks in.  The night before, I realised that its a little chilly and therefore off we treck to sprinter to purchase flesh colour thermals for both children to wear under their costumes. No sleep as very excited children and a mummy that's worrying about have I followed all costume demands?  A beauty and beast in hand and off we go to the meeting point. I'm in spain and try to remember that I must add at...

The Endless House Guest

I've been married for 8 weeks now, its been an absolute whirlwind. Wedding, International move all in 5 weeks.  This new life in a foreign country is not what I imagined. Job start date delayed due to covid. Restrictions on socialising. Restricted school hours and all in a language im still trying to get to grips with. Anyway, my partner of years, father to our children and  husband for weeks notifies me his friend is visiting and will be staying.  After a very brushed off conversation in regards to length of stay, arrangements and my rant over it not being great timing, off he pops to the airport.  Having a stranger in your home is fine for dinner, but not weeks on end. He tries to help, way too much, he feeds the kids treats just before meals. He's a really nice bloke.... I feel guilty, but this is not what I signed up for!! He drinks beer for breakfast, lunch and tea. My husband over compensates. He takes him here there and everywhere. These little trips eve...
